In a move to simplify its generative AI branding, Google has merged its Bard and Duet AI services into a single entity called Gemini, inspired by Google’s multimodal AI model. This change, leaked earlier this month, coincides with the release of a new Gemini Android app and an upgraded paid version of the chatbot.
Gemini Unveiled
Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed in a blog post that Bard, known for granting users direct access to advanced models, will now be rebranded as Gemini. Currently available in 40 languages on the web, Gemini will soon debut on Android via a dedicated app and on iOS through the Google app.
Enhanced User Experience
Users of the Gemini Android app can opt to replace Google Assistant as their primary assistant, seamlessly transitioning to Gemini’s functionalities. This allows users to activate Gemini by long-pressing the home button or using the voice command “Hey Google.” Alternatively, users can make this switch in Assistant settings.
Interactive Features
Once activated, Gemini introduces a conversational overlay on the device display, providing contextual suggestions such as generating descriptions for recently captured photos or offering additional information about articles on the screen.
