Qi2: Next-Gen Wireless Charging

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) crafted Qi2 as an advanced wireless charging technology, drawing from MagSafe. Initially seen on the iPhone 12, MagSafe offers speeds up to 15W. Previously, third-party chargers, lacking MagSafe certification, were capped at 7.5W. However, Qi2 empowers these chargers to reach the full 15W speed.

Apple’s Progress

Last year, Apple enabled 15W charging with Qi2 for iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 via iOS 17.2. The iPhone 15 series already supported Qi2 upon release, leaving iPhone 12 as the lone model lacking Qi2’s faster charging capability.

iOS 17.4 Update

Reader reports and Macworld tests confirm iPhone 12’s ability to charge at 15W using a Qi2 wireless charger post iOS 17.4 update. The device showcases a 15W charging animation with Qi2 chargers. Tests with the Anker Qi2 MagGo Wireless Charger reveal speeds akin to MagSafe.

Apple’s Silence

Apple openly acknowledged Qi2 support for iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 with iOS 17.2 but remained mum on iOS 17.4’s impact on iPhone 12. This may stem from iPhone 12’s wireless charging tech, developed before Qi2’s finalization, rooted in the original Qi standard and MagSafe.
