A new hint suggests that OnePlus may be transitioning from RTOS to Google’s Wear OS for its upcoming smartwatch. The clue arises from Oppo, OnePlus’ sister company, which has teased the launch of the Watch X, closely resembling earlier images of the OnePlus Watch 2.
Oppo’s recent teaser on X (formerly Twitter) showcases the upcoming Watch X, scheduled for launch on February 29. The hardware bears a striking resemblance to previously leaked images of the OnePlus Watch 2, retaining familiar features such as angular side buttons. While minor hardware adjustments are possible, the overall similarity is notable.
Oppo’s teaser reveals a “Wear OS by Google” logo, suggesting a potential shift in operating systems. The requirement of Android 8.0 or newer further hints at Wear OS integration. If Oppo’s smartwatch indeed adopts Wear OS, it’s highly likely that OnePlus’ forthcoming wearable will follow suit, given the close relationship between the two companies.
While OnePlus confirmed the unveiling of the OnePlus Watch 2 on February 26 at MWC, Oppo’s teaser adds a compelling layer to the narrative. Considering the intertwined nature of these sister companies, the probability of OnePlus adopting Wear OS increases significantly.
Some specifications of the Oppo Watch X have already surfaced, including a 1.43-inch OLED screen with a 466 x 466 resolution and a 500mAh battery supporting 10W charging. Similarly, the OnePlus Watch 2 is expected to feature a similar battery size, as indicated by an FCC listing. Additionally, OnePlus has touted up to 100 hours of battery life in Smart mode for its upcoming smartwatch.
