Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold Shows Samsung is Falling Behind in Foldable Development

The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold clearly demonstrates that Samsung might be losing its edge in foldable smartphone innovation. We can argue that the Pixel 9 Pro Fold offers better overall hardware than the Galaxy Z Fold6. This suggests Samsung might be getting complacent due to the lack of strong competition globally. Now, Google is stepping in with serious competition, launching its foldable in seventeen countries.

Better Aspect Ratios

Users have long criticized the Galaxy Z Fold series for its awkward aspect ratios, particularly the narrow cover screen. Although Samsung has made some improvements, the Galaxy Z Fold6’s cover screen remains too narrow compared to standard bar smartphones.

In contrast, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold boasts a 6.3-inch cover display with a 20:9 aspect ratio, providing a more familiar and user-friendly experience. Additionally, it’s a 1080p panel, whereas the Z Fold6 falls short at 968p.

Bigger and Better Display

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold stands out with its larger folding display, measuring 207.4 cm² compared to the Z Fold6’s 185.2 cm². It also has a higher resolution and a near 1:1 ratio, which makes multitasking more efficient. Multitasking is, after all, a key reason people buy book-style foldables.

Thinner Yet Heavier

Google has managed to slim down the Pixel 9 Pro Fold significantly. When folded, it’s just 10.5mm thick, which is close to the thickness of a regular smartphone. This makes it substantially thinner than both the Galaxy Z Fold6, which is 12.1mm, and the OnePlus Open, which is 11.7mm. When unfolded, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is just 5.1mm thick, barely more than the thickness of its USB-C port.

More RAM and Better Cameras

While the Galaxy Z Fold6 uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which might have better performance than Google’s new Tensor G4, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold has an advantage in RAM. It comes with 16GB of RAM, compared to the Galaxy Z Fold6’s 12GB. More RAM allows for smoother multitasking and better responsiveness.
