Microsoft has warned users about potential VPN connection disruptions caused by the April security updates for Windows. The company acknowledged that installing the April 2024 security update (KB5036893) or the non-security preview update might lead to VPN connection failures.
Initially reported by Bleeping Computer, the issue affects Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows Server 2008 onwards. User reports on Reddit vary, with some claiming their VPNs still work after the update, while others report problems with encrypted connections.
In the meantime, users can attempt to uninstall all security updates as a temporary fix. Some Redditors have found success by uninstalling and then reinstalling their VPN apps.
Microsoft has provided instructions for uninstalling the security updates. Users can remove the LCU using the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name. They can find the package name by executing the command: DISM /online /get-packages.
