AMD and Microsoft have rolled out an optional Windows 11 23H2 update, KB5041587, bringing CPU scheduler optimizations that were originally intended for the upcoming 24H2 update. This backport allows Ryzen 5000, 7000, and 9000 users to enjoy improved performance without waiting for the major OS update.
Improved gaming performance for ryzen cpus
Early tests, particularly in gaming scenarios, indicate a 10-13% performance boost for Ryzen 7000 and 9000 CPUs. These gains are most noticeable in games running at 1080p with high-end GPUs like the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090. Users playing at higher resolutions, like 1440p or 4K, may not see as significant improvements due to GPU limitations.
Broader benefits and limitations
While the update benefits older Ryzen CPUs, especially in gaming, the improvements may not be as evident in multi-threaded or single-threaded workloads. AMD’s own benchmarks show no performance change in these areas with the 24H2 update, highlighting that gains are more pronounced in specific scenarios.
Available now, broader release coming soon
The Windows 11 24H2 update is currently available as a preview through the Windows Insider Release Preview channel. It includes new under-the-hood improvements, such as a new kernel and scheduler, which could benefit various CPU architectures. The full public rollout is expected this fall.
