Instagram to Default Teen Accounts to Private Mode in Effort to Enhance Safety

Starting Tuesday, Instagram will automatically set all new and existing accounts for users under 18 to private mode, a significant change aimed at improving safety for teenagers on the platform. In this setting, users must approve follower requests before those followers can view, like, or comment on their posts.

This initiative, part of Instagram’s new “Teen Accounts” framework, introduces a range of safeguards designed to create more age-appropriate experiences for young users. By prioritizing privacy, Instagram seeks to address growing concerns from lawmakers and parent groups regarding the impact of social media on children.

While these changes may provide additional protection for teens, they could also frustrate some young users and influencers who rely on public profiles for visibility and engagement. The move reflects a balancing act between promoting safety and maintaining the platform’s appeal to its younger demographic.
