The NFL is using Teams to digitize collaboration and deliver virtual game day experiences, the Los Angeles Clippers are engaging fans with a hyper-personalized game night experience using Dynamics 365 Marketing, and the Miami Dolphins are using Power Virtual Agents and Power BI for an automated and predictive website experience.

6 Web Design and Development Trends for 2021

If you want to be ahead of the curve for the coming year, you’re in luck. We’ve checked out the field and rounded up some of the most prominent and impactful directions the design and development world is moving in.

In this article, we’ll explore six of the most exciting trends in web design and development that we expect to see take off in 2021. Let’s dig in!

1.Progressive Web Apps

The first trend we’ll look at is Progressive Web Apps (PWAs). These are web-based applications that aim to combine the best of both web apps and mobile apps using the latest technologies.

Typically, the strength of web apps that they’re available on any platform. On the other hand, native mobile apps generally offer better performance and a more natural feel, as well as advanced features such as push notifications.

PWAs are websites built using web technologies that enable them to behave and feel like native apps. This also makes them available in any browser.

The big advantage here for developers is that PWAs are much easier to deploy and maintain. You only need to work with the one web app, rather than dealing with a separate one for each mobile platform (Android, iOS, maybe a tablet-optimized app, etc.).

PWAs have actually been around for a couple of years now. However, their usage has been growing, and we think it will continue to be one of the top design and development trends in 2021.


Neumorphism is a fairly new style that combines modern, ‘flat’ design with some elements of old-school skeuomorphism (think the old iOS design language from around 2010). It caused quite a stir when it first appeared on the scene.
Neumorphism provides a clean, modern, and attractive style that’s a little more functional and much easier to navigate than the standard flat design that’s been so prevalent in the last few years. This is definitely a trend to watch in the coming year.

3.Thumb-Friendly Mobile Design

These days, big smartphones are the norm. Even the compact, ‘mini’ versions of devices dwarf their counterparts from just a few years ago.

These large screens are fantastic for media consumption and fitting a lot of content in a single view in general, but they come at the cost of ergonomics. It’s tough to use a modern smartphone with one hand.

To compensate, some developers have taken to moving key UI elements lower on the page. For example, many apps have menus along the bottom of the screen rather than the top. Others make use of large headers and copious white space to push elements down so they’re within reach of users’ thumbs.


Color gradients made a big comeback this year around the web. Expect this to be among the design and development trends to continue into 2021.

Gradients are fantastic. They’re pleasing to look at, they can be eye-catching, and they help your web content stand out.

5.Single-Page Apps

A Single-Page Application (SPA) is exactly what it sounds like – a web app that consists of only one page. New data loads as users click on different elements, but the page never has to refresh because it doesn’t need to navigate to a new URL.

With SPAs, dynamic elements on the page give a sense of flow and continuity between different areas of the app. The advantages of this approach are a simpler deployment process and a smooth and pleasing User Experience (UX).

6.Motion UI

Animations on web pages, from subtle icon movements to full-screen parallax effects, have really started to take off. We think this will likely be one of the strongest web design and development trends in 2021.

This is due in large part to new technologies and libraries that enable smoother motion effects with lower resource usage. In other words, users on older or lower-powered devices won’t have their browsing experience slowed to a crawl, so the effects can be implemented more widely. Additionally, libraries such as Motion UI make it easier than ever to build and implement these effects.

The WordPress Admin Toolbar: Why Customize It?

Before we get into the specifics of how to customize the toolbar, let’s spend a moment discussing why you might want to go through this effort in the first place. What follows are just a few reasons:

  • You may wish to add shortcuts to frequently accessed parts of your site that aren’t present in the toolbar by default.
  • Sometimes plugins, themes, or other third-party tools add a menu or feature to the toolbar that you don’t want to be there.
  • You may want to add white-labeling to the admin toolbar to create a more branded experience for your team or clients.
  • The location of the toolbar is inconvenient for your personal workflow and you’d like to move it to appear elsewhere.

How to Add Items to the WordPress Admin Toolbar

If you want to add items to the WordPress toolbar, your first order of business is to add markup to the functions.php file in WordPress. Or, you can always download the Code Snippets plugin. It allows you to add code to your theme files without having to dig around in them directly.

Finally, you can also use similar code to add submenu items to existing links. For that, you just need to know the ID of the parent you want to target and include it in the code snippet. For example, here’s how you add a submenu item to the link leading to your site’s front end

Use a Plugin to Customize the Toolbar

If you want to skip the code route altogether, there are three plugins we’d like to highlight here that make adding links and menus to the WordPress toolbar a snap. Let’s take a look:


Branda is a full-fledged white labeling plugin that allows you to customize nearly every aspect of your website’s dashboard. It’s also free. The plugin lets you change or remove logos from the toolbar, add toolbar links, remove toolbar links, and more. In addition, it has a variety of other customization features. You can change the dashboard’s look, change the login screen, make new color schemes, modify system emails, and more.

2.Admin Toolbar Menus

Another plugin option is Admin Toolbar Menus, which makes it easy to establish three different WordPress toolbar locations on the dashboard. In addition, you can make custom toolbar menus using the standard WordPress menus page. It includes support for multi-level menus as well. The menu locations are under the Site Name menu dropdown, along the primary toolbar, and under the My Account dropdown. There are also no settings to be configured, just select your menu location, what it should contain, and you’re good to go.

3.Toolbar Publish Button

The last plugin we’d recommend for this section is Toolbar Publish Button. It simply adds the Publish button to the WordPress admin toolbar. This way, you don’t have to scroll down the page to get to the Publish/Save button. Just access it at the top of your site and proceed with your work.

How to Remove Items from the Toolbar

If you’re finding the WordPress toolbar too cluttered, you can remove the items as well. This, again, happens either manually or through the use of a plugin. Let’s look at the code route first.

Thankfully, manually removing items from the WordPress toolbar is as simple as using the remove_node() function in functions.php. To do this, you need to first locate the toolbar menu item IDs, then use a bit of code to remove them.

We have already covered above how you can find out the IDs with the browser developer tools. It’s the same for removing menu items. For example, here’s what it would look like if you wanted to get rid of the WordPress logo:

You interact with hundreds of instances of microcopy every day.Open a new tab on your browser. You can see a search bar with a placeholder text, right. That’s a form of a microcopy.These tiny bits of information can make the difference between an online user experience that facilitates a customer and a user experience that pushes a customer away.

Microcopy refers to the short snippets of text that improve the usability of your website, app or any other digital interface. Similar to longer-form copies like landing pages, the goal of microcopy is to inspire action and guide a user in his journey.

Hulu’s homepage is an excellent example of microcopy at work. The user immediately understands Hulu’s purpose and the value proposition — thousands of shows and movies to choose from and watch. The word free in the call-to-action button further entices the user to click through.

While navigating your website or application, a user must be able to figure out what everything does within seconds. It creates a pleasant, effortless experience.

Microcopy can make or break that experience.

Short messages calling for direct action engage more users. A Nielson study found that concise text and objective language improved usability by 124%.

For example, Airbnb’s homepage uses several microcopy elements to compel users to click through. The message “I’m flexible”, in particular, stands out.

Effective holiday site design starts with smart promotion planning

You need to decide how many holiday sales you’ll have. For example, your store could kick off the holiday shopping season (which pretty much starts in October now, btw) with an early-bird promo, then another sale during Black Friday week and a last-minute stocking-stuffer promo in mid-December.

The exact number and timing of your holiday sales depends on how your customers shop and on shipping timetables—a sale too close to Christmas might not leave enough time for orders to arrive for gifting. Whatever your plan is, put it in writing and get it on your calendar.

You’ll also need to decide whether your sales will offer progressive discount levels–for example, 50% off selected items one day and then 60% off the next. This kind of promo requires more work and assets than a flat-rate discount, so estimate your ROI carefully before you commit.

Got your holiday promotions planned? Awesome! That means you’re ready to plan the design elements and development you’ll need.

Simple changes like holiday-themed images and a bow or string of holiday lights on your logo are a good way to add festive touches that enhance your brand. However, don’t change brand elements like your site fonts, the style of your photography or the overall design of your logo. You want busy shoppers to know they’re in the right place when they come to your site.

2.Make your holiday art and copy as inclusive as possible

It’s true year-round that the more inclusive your photos, illustrations and copy, the more customers your site design will appeal to. Intellect: A mental healthcare service that provides teletherapy for employers in Asia. They’ve also got a free consumer app at the top of the funnel that has seen 2.5 million users since launching a year ago. The company says it’s grown to $500,000 ARR in the last six months.

MazumaGo: Banking and electronics payment service for construction companies. MazumaGo aims to help this antiquated industry move off of traditional banking and into a unified ledger. The banking infrastructure product puts credit and debit cards into customer hands, starting in the United States.

Pandai: Pandai is helping kids in elementary/high school in Southeast Asia boost their grades with a learning app that replaces take-home workbooks. With more than 1,600 paying subscribers using the app for almost an hour a day, Pandai may be on its way to helping thousands more get the A.

Locale: Think that DoorDash doesn’t have enough food options? Locale is betting that some folks want more options and are willing to pay for that access. The startup wants to help restaurants sell farther from their operations, and its model is showing some early traction. The company’s revenue (GMV, perhaps) scaled from $145,500 in July to $192,000 in August. The startup claims 70% retention month to month and an average order of just over $100.

Arrow: Arrow is building one-click-checkout-payment infrastructure for online sellers in Southeast Asia aiming to boost social commerce among small sellers. The team behind Arrow helped launch GrabPay and has already scaled GMV at the startup to $150,000.

Talentdrop: A hiring marketplace where open jobs are posted with “bounties.” If someone you refer is ultimately hired and stays a while, you get the bounty. The company says that $1 million in bounties have been posted to the site thus far.

Infina: A retail investing app aiming to be the Robinhood of Vietnam. Since launch in January, Infina has reached over $2.5 million in assets under management. Its first focus was breaking open mutual funds and fixed-income products, and now it wants to head into stocks and crypto for its younger user base.

BlackOakTV: Black millennials are bigger consumers of streaming content than other demographics, but comparatively little of that content is made with them in mind. Black Oak TV is a subscription streaming service by and for Black creators and stars — could the next Dave Chappelle or Issa Rae come from here instead of YouTube or TikTok?

HEO Robotics: This startup wants to leverage unused time on existing satellites that monitor the planet to find stuff in space. Not trash, like the startup that presented yesterday that wants to clean up space around Earth, but things like other satellites. HEO says that it is selling to the Australian government, and executed a live in-orbit demo during Y Combinator. There are going to be many more satellites in space over time, the company says, which could boost demand for its service.

Gallery : Gallery is building a platform to help developers quickly create self-stage staging environments, saving time and energy. The founding team has experience from Facebook and Goldman Sachs and hopes to tackle what it believes is a $5 billion market for mid-sized engineering teams alone.

Apple announces new settlement with Japan allowing developers to link to external websites

Apple has made a settlement with Japanese regulator that it will allow developers of “reader” apps link to their own website for managing users account. The change goes to effect in early 2022.

This settlement comes after the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) has forced Apple to make a change its polices on the reader apps, like Netflix, Spotify, Audible and Dropbox, that provide purchased content or content subscriptions for digital magazines, newspapers, books, audio, music, and video.

“We have great respect for the Japan Fair Trade Commission and appreciate the work we’ve done together, which will help developers of reader apps make it easier for users to set up an manage their apps and service, while protecting their privacy and maintaining their trust,” Phill Schiller, who oversees the App Stores at Apple.

Before the change takes into effect next year, Apple will continue to update its guidelines and review process for users of readers app to make sure to be a better marketplace for users and developers alike, according to its statement.

Apple Stores announced last week several updates, which allow developers more flexibility for their customer, and the company also launched the News Partner Program to support local journalists.

Apple will also apply this change globally to all reader apps on the store.

Global lawmakers have been increasingly under scrutiny over the market dominance of Apple and other tech giants. Australia’s Competitions and Consumer Commission is also considering regulations for the digital payment system of Apple, Google and WeChat while South Korea became the first country to curb Apple and Google from imposing their own payment system on in-app purchases.

Apple provides more than 30 million registered developers.
